If you are unsure as to whether or not your son needs a boarding school for troubled boys, the following information will help you make this life-changing decision. Below, you’ll not only learn what boarding schools for boys are and the possible reasons a troubled teen may need to spend time in one, but you’ll also learn how boys boarding schools can benefit the entire family.

What is a boarding school for boys?

Boarding schools for troubled boys, such as Monuments, provide a highly structured, yet nurturing environment in which teens struggling with addictions, behavioral and/ or school problems, and emotional issues can address their specific problems head-on and learn the skills they need to change them for the better.

Away from any potential negative influences from home, they are able to focus on the issues that brought them to a boarding school for boys, allowing him to break his destructive or maladaptive behaviors and habits and replace them with new, healthy ones.

As a boys boarding school, Monuments caters to the learning style of boys, lessening the social pressure teens often feel in a co-ed setting. Here, troubled teens are exposed to a variety of proven therapeutic interventions, including individual, group, and family therapy, that prompt him to want to make positive changes in his life.

At this boarding school for troubled boys, each teen is assessed by the treatment team before his individualized treatment plan for both his short-term and long-term goals is created using his personal strengths and limitations.

In a boys boarding school, teens benefit from structure, supervision, and discipline. While part of the caring community, they have plenty of support, easy to understand responsibilities, and a consistent schedule that includes a wide array of therapies.

Possible Reasons One May Benefit From a Boys Boarding School

There are multiple reasons your teen may need a boarding school for boys, including:

  • Depression, self-harming behaviors, low self-esteem, and other emotional disturbances
  • Anxiety, stress, and difficulty adapting to a new situation, such as a divorce, move, or death of a loved one
  • Struggling to recover from a traumatic event
  • Drug and/ or alcohol addiction or abuse, including the unauthorized use of prescription medications
  • Rebellious and/ or aggressive behavior, thoughts of hurting others
  • ADHD and impulse control disorders

  • Unhealthy relationships with peers

Our boys’ boarding school offers the structured, yet compassionate environment and the proven therapeutic interventions necessary to put an end to all of the behaviors above, as well as any others that may be stopping your teen from excelling in life.

What type of counseling do they students receive?

Monuments is a therapeutic boarding school. This means Monuments isn’t simply a place to send a troubled teen hoping to instill some discipline, such as a military boarding school. Instead, we offer a destination where troubled teenage boys are emersed in a completely new environment and receive therapy in addition to a full educational curriculum.

We specialize in therapies that have proven to be the most successful with troubled teenage boys. We use equine-assisted therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, experiential therapy, outdoor adventure therapy, group sessions, individual psychotherapy, and family sessions.

How Everyone in the Family Benefits from a Boys Boarding School

Choosing to send your son to a boarding school for troubled boys offers many benefits, including peace of mind for you. In addition to knowing that your teen is safe and in an environment that is conducive to positive behavioral and emotional changes, you’ll benefit from knowing that teens are less likely to run away from a boys boarding school when they are unfamiliar with their surroundings. At the same time, the change in location can offer an additional therapeutic benefit, such as removing any unnecessary pressures or temptations.

The troubled teen’s siblings and other family members will benefit immensely from living in an environment that is free of the chaos, hostility, and even violence that were almost certainly present before he left for a boarding school for troubled boys. This could also protect your other children from going down a similar path of destruction, particularly when substance abuse is involved.

Studies show that there is a strong sibling influence on adolescent substance abuse. When your teen returns home from a boarding school for boys, he will have made significant changes that will have given him the tools he needs to discover his true potential.

Will I be able to visit? If so, how often is this possible?

It’s been proven that residential therapeutic boarding schools help the teen learn to appreciate his family. By being in a completely new environment, away from all of the old triggers for behaviors, our teens are able to look at their family relationships in a new way.

One of our main focus areas it to strengthen family bonds with frequent, supportive communication. Parents and family members are allowed to email your child any time you wish, and your teen can do the same. Once weekly, we have a designated time scheduled with family for a private phone call.

Several times each year, we host designated weekends where families are invited to campus for an intensive family weekend. These weekends will involve family therapy sessions.

In other words, your teenage son may not be in your home, but he won’t be out of contact while he’s at Monuments.

Will my son receive educational classes when at Monuments?

Most of the teens who come to Monuments have fallen behind in school. Whether due to addiction or emotional problems, school usually has taken a back seat. As the child falls more and more behind it only fuels more usage in case of addiction or a spiraling of destructive behavior in cases of depression and other psychological conditions.

That’s why we make education a cornerstone of our therapeutic boarding school. We seek to keep the student on track in middle or high school, enabling him to reenter school when he leaves us. For many students our areas of educational focus give them, often for the first time in their lives, an area they really become interested in learning about and growing within.

Our progressive education program has four tracks. These are structured around the student’s readiness to learn, which allows each student to progress at his own pace. These are the four tracks we offer:

  1. Digital Fabrication — This track seeks to get students thinking and creating using rapid prototyping technology. Projects are based on learning the authentic application of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software. The objective is for students to develop their idea visually so it can be transferred into data using the software.
  2. Outdoor Recreation & Leadership — This track provides a strong foundation in outdoor technical and interpersonal skills required by outdoor occupations and recreation professionals. The focus is to develop leadership competencies while promoting safe outdoor practices. Activities from rock climbing to canyoneering to kayaking teach students the theories of leadership, wilderness first aid, group dynamics, proper use and maintenance of outdoor equipment, and principles of outdoor guiding.
  3. UAV Design & Aviation — This track introduces students to the job demands of the growing UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) aviation industry. Students passionate about technology, robotics, and automation have the opportunity to design and build their own UAV drones. Students are also able to earn an FAA license, which is required by industry professionals.
  4. Equestrian Trades — This track provides the preeminent “human-horse experience.” This process deepens students’ understanding of themselves, which is necessary to master the basic principles of horsemanship. Students establish how to communicate effectively, recognize behavioral signals, see the effects of the stress-response system, and learn proper grooming, riding, and training techniques. This track provides students with the knowledge and skills to pursue a career path in equestrian trades.
